SOCKS Overview
The Sambar Server SOCKS proxy functionality relays data between a
client and an application server. From the application server's perspective,
the SOCKS proxy is the client. This "circuit-level" firewall hides the
true identity of the clients from the application server and provides
a single point of access for external traffic.
SOCKS is a networking proxy protocol that enables hosts on one side of
SOCKS server to gain full access to hosts on the other side of the SOCKS
server without requiring direct IP reachability. SOCKS redirects connection
requests from hosts on opposite sides of a SOCKS server. The SOCKS server
authenticates and authorizes the requests, establishes a proxy connection,
and relays data.
The Sambar Server SOCKS proxy supports both version 4 and version 5 of
the SOCKS protocol, however, authentication from
SOCKS5 is not supported in the current implementation.

Client/Browser Configuration
Microsoft IE 3.0
To configure Microsoft's Internet Explorer 3.0 to connect to the Internet via
the Sambar Server SOCKS Proxy, simply go to
View -> Options -> Connection.
Enable Connect Through a Proxy Server, and press Settings.
Then in the Servers section, leave all the fields blank, except for
the Socks server setting. Put the IP address of the Sambar Server here,
and in the Port field for the Socks server, type 1080.
Microsoft Internet Explorer 4
If you have problems using Internet Explorer 4 with the Sambar Server SOCKS
proxy, you may need to download the Internet Explorer Service Pack 1
from Microsoft which fixes some installation problems with Internet Explorer.
You will also need to set the proxy server, as described above for IE 3.0.
Netscape Navigator 3
To configure Netscape Navigator 3 to connect to the Internet the Sambar Server
SOCKS proxy, go to:
Options -> Network Preferences ->
Manual Proxy Configuration.
Press View. Leave all the fields blank, except for the SOCKS Host
setting, type the IP address of the Sambar Server here, and in the
Port field type 1080.
Netscape Navigator 4
To configure Netscape Navigator 4 to connect to the Internet the Sambar Server
SOCKS proxy, go to:
Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced
-> Proxies -> Manual Proxy
Configuration.
Press View. Leave all the fields blank, except for the SOCKS Host
setting, type the IP address of the computer running the Sambar Server, and
in the Port field type 1080.
Other Internet client software
To configure other client software you will likely need something like
SOCKSCAP or the
'Hummingbird'
SOCKS Client which lets you use any TCP/IP programs via a SOCKS firewall.
Both SOCKSCAP and the Hummingbird SOCKS client are FREE.
